SSAB leads the way to a fossil-free future!
With a proud history and a clear vision for the future, SSAB has taken the lead in sustainable steel production. Matts Nilsson, Head of Sales Sweden & Norway, explains how SSAB will showcase its pioneering work with fossil-free steel at this year's Elmia Subcontractor, and how this is helping to transform the industry and reduce its carbon footprint.

SSAB is a pioneer in the green transition of the steel industry, and back in 2016, together with LKAB and Vattenfall, they launched the HYBRIT™ initiative - a revolutionary steelmaking technology that has put SSAB at the forefront globally.

– We have developed a completely new process where coal is replaced by hydrogen in steel production. This means that instead of carbon dioxide, we release water. This technology can reduce Sweden's carbon dioxide emissions by 10 per cent and 7 per cent in Finland, explains Matts Nilsson.

Major investments for a sustainable future

To enable this sustainable transition, SSAB is making significant investments in its facilities. Among other things, a completely new steel mill will be built in Luleå, in parallel with the existing production. The investment is estimated at SEK 55 billion and is among the largest industrial projects in Sweden today.

– We are building for the future and creating tomorrow's steel production. When the new plants are operational, we will phase out our older blast furnaces, further reducing our emissions. Our ambition is to have a completely fossil-free production around 2030. In addition, we already produce SSAB Zero™, a scrap-based steel that is basically produced without fossil emissions, says Nilsson.

Elmia Subcontractor - a meeting place for the industry of the future

SSAB first participated in Elmia Subcontractor in 1983 and has since returned several times. They see the fair as an important arena to showcase their transformation and to meet customers. But SSAB's presence at the fair is not just about building business relationships; the company's sustainability work has also given them a strong purpose as an employer.

– For us, it's about attracting the labour force of the future. Many young people want to be part of something bigger, and our journey towards fossil-free steel is something that really engages them. By being seen at the fair, we hope to inspire more people to participate in this global transition and attract future talent to the company, says Nilsson.

Navigating Change Together

This year's theme, Navigating Change Together, reflects SSAB's vision of a shared path towards a sustainable future.

– For us, change is not just about our own transition, but about leading the entire steel industry towards a sustainable future. Together with our partners and customers, we can create the value chain of the future - fossil-free, competitive and with sustainability in focus, concludes Matts Nilsson.
